The torque converter transfers torque between the engine and the automatic transmission through fluid circulating between a pump impeller, a turbine and a stator. When moving off it can multiply torque, and its internal lock-up clutch reduces hydraulic slip in defined operating modes. The lock-up clutch is one of the most common wear points, but correct diagnosis must also cover its control by the valve body, the fluid condition and the remaining internal components. One rule stands above everything in this category: a converter that has operated in a system with metal or heavy friction contamination must not be reinstalled without proper opening, cleaning, inspection and remanufacturing or replacement - reusing it recirculates the debris into a freshly repaired transmission and is a leading cause of repeat failures.

Important: these symptoms alone do not prove a converter failure. Similar behavior can be caused by the engine, mounts, flexplate, valve body, incorrect pressure or an internal transmission problem. Diagnosis is required before ordering.
