Jatco (Japan Automatic Transmission Company, majority-owned by Nissan) is one of the largest CVT manufacturers in the world, with its units fitted across the Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi and Suzuki ranges. Its units appear under two code systems: Jatco’s own JF codes and the installer’s codes (Nissan RE0F10A is the Jatco JF011E, for example), which regularly confuses parts searches. Beyond the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi world, Jatco history includes one of the great cross-brand units of the 2000s: the JF506E 5-speed, fitted to the VW Sharan and Galaxy (as the 09A), Jaguar X-Type, Land Rover Freelander and Mazda MPV.
CVT units (JF011E, JF015E, JF016E): belt and pulley wear from overheating and aged fluid; valve body and stepper motor wear causing ratio hunting and judder; TCM faults. Overheating protection triggers limp behavior on hot days when the cooler is neglected.
JF015E specifically: the auxiliary gearset adds shift-quality complaints that mimic clutch problems.
RE5R05A: the classic valve body and TCM unit failures with harsh 4-5 shifts and limp mode - a mature, well-documented repair.
JF506E: valve body and solenoid wear with delayed engagement and shift flare.

The intervals below are general MID Auto workshop guidance. The exact fluid specification, quantity, service procedure and interval must be confirmed by transmission code, VIN and the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation.
CVT units depend more directly on fluid condition than any conventional automatic: aged CVT fluid loses the friction properties the belt depends on, and overheating and aged fluid are the leading causes of belt and pulley wear. Jatco CVTs require the exact fluid specified for the unit and vehicle (NS-2 / NS-3 or the vehicle manufacturer’s approved equivalent); as general guidance, change it every 40,000-60,000 km. Conventional units (RE5R05A, JF506E): fluid and filter every 60,000 km with the correct specification. A working, clean transmission cooler matters as much as the fluid itself.
