ZF Friedrichshafen is the world’s largest independent transmission manufacturer, and its automatics have powered premium European cars for over four decades. ZF gearboxes are used by BMW, Audi, VW, Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Aston Martin, BMW-era Rolls-Royce and many more - often under the manufacturer’s own branding, so many drivers do not realize their transmission is a ZF. The line stretches from the classic 4HP and 5HP torque converter automatics through the 6HP generation that pioneered mechatronic control, to the 8HP that has become the industry benchmark, the 9HP for transverse applications, and the PDK dual-clutch gearboxes built for Porsche.
5HP: valve body wear causing shift flare and harsh engagement; torque converter lock-up wear at high mileage.
6HP: mechatronic faults and the well-known sealing sleeve / bridge seal leaks causing loss of drive when warm; valve body wear; software adaptation issues after repair.
8HP: mechatronic and solenoid wear at high mileage; torque converter shudder; plastic oil pan / integrated filter service items.
9HP: gear engagement faults related to its dog-clutch design; software updates are often part of the correct repair.
PDK: clutch pack wear under performance driving; mechatronic control faults causing shift hesitation.
Our store solutions: overhaul kits, friction and steel disc sets, mechatronic components and sleeves, solenoids, valve body parts, oil pans with integrated filters, torque converter parts and complete rebuild kits - OE, OEM and selected aftermarket, depending on the unit.
4HP series - classic 4-speed automatics in older BMW, Audi and VW models.
5HP series: 5HP18, 5HP19, 5HP24, 5HP30 - 5-speed automatics of the 1990s-2000s in BMW, Audi, VW, Jaguar and Porsche. Durable and widely rebuilt today.
6HP series: 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26, 6HP28, 6HP32 - the first automatics with an integrated mechatronic module; BMW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley and more.
8HP series: 8HP45, 8HP50, 8HP70, 8HP75, 8HP90 - the modern 8-speed benchmark, used across BMW, Audi (as AL551), Jaguar Land Rover, Chrysler/Dodge (licensed as 850RE/8HP) and many others.
9HP series (9HP48) - 9-speed for transverse applications: Land Rover, Honda (licensed), Jeep/Fiat (948TE).
PDK: 7DT-45, 7DT-70, 8DT - Porsche’s dual-clutch gearboxes, built by ZF for the 911, Cayman, Boxster and Panamera.
The intervals below are general MID Auto workshop guidance. The exact fluid specification, quantity, service procedure and interval must be confirmed by transmission code, VIN and the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation.
ZF rates many of its automatics as lifetime-filled and also offers official Lifeguard service kits and fluids. ZF’s own documentation allows intervals of up to approximately 150,000 km for certain applications, with earlier changes recommended under high operating temperatures, heavy loads or unknown service history. As MID Auto’s more conservative workshop guidance: fluid and filter every 60,000-80,000 km with the correct LifeguardFluid generation for the unit (Lifeguard 5 for 5HP, 6 for 6HP, 8 for 8HP; PDK uses its own specification). Neglected fluid service is a leading cause of premature mechatronic and clutch wear.
