Chrysler’s transmission story mixes bold in-house engineering with smart licensing. The in-house line runs from the TorqueFlite legends through the electronically controlled 41TE - among the first mass-produced electronic automatics - to the 62TE and the RFE truck family. Alongside them, Chrysler adopted proven outside designs: the NAG1 is the Mercedes-Benz 722.6 serving in the 300C, Charger, Jeep and Crossfire, while modern Jeep and Ram models run licensed ZF designs (948TE, 850RE). Fluid discipline is the defining theme of this category: ATF+4 is the mandatory specification for Chrysler’s own families, while the NAG1 and the newer 8- and 9-speed units use different, transmission-specific fluids - always confirm the specification against the exact transmission code.
41TE / 62TE: solenoid pack failures and input/output speed sensor faults triggering limp mode; valve body wear with harsh or delayed shifts; the 62TE adds underdrive clutch wear at high mileage.
45RFE / 545RFE: solenoid pack wear, valve body accumulator issues, converter clutch shudder.
68RFE: clutch capacity limits under tuned diesel torque; valve body and solenoid wear - a heavily supported upgrade market exists.
NAG1: conductor plate failures and converter wear - the same well-documented pattern as the Mercedes-Benz 722.6.
948TE: gear engagement complaints where software updates are part of the correct repair.
Our store solutions: overhaul kits, solenoid packs, valve body components, friction and steel sets, input/output sensors, torque converter parts and complete rebuild kits - OE, OEM and selected aftermarket, depending on the unit.
62TE - the 6-speed front-wheel-drive workhorse of the Grand Voyager / Town & Country, Pacifica, Journey V6 and Chrysler 200 era.
41TE / A604 (and 40TE / 41TES developments) - the classic electronic 4-speed of two decades of minivans and sedans.
45RFE / 545RFE / 65RFE / 66RFE - the rear-wheel-drive family of Jeep Grand Cherokee, Commander, Ram and Dakota applications.
68RFE - the heavy-duty 6-speed behind the Ram Cummins diesels.
NAG1 (W5A580) - the licensed Mercedes-Benz 722.6 in the 300C, Charger, Magnum, Crossfire and Jeep models. Parts and technical information for this unit are published in the 722.6 category.
948TE and 850RE - the licensed ZF 9- and 8-speeds of the modern Jeep Cherokee, Renegade, Compass, Wrangler and Ram 1500.
The intervals below are general MID Auto workshop guidance. The exact fluid specification, quantity, service procedure and interval must be confirmed by transmission code, VIN and the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation.
ATF+4 is the design requirement for the in-house Chrysler families (41TE, 62TE, RFE) - the friction characteristics of universal fluids do not match it. The NAG1 follows the Mercedes-Benz 722.6 fluid regime, and the licensed ZF 8- and 9-speeds (850RE, 948TE) require their own transmission-specific fluids. As general guidance: fluid and filter around every 60,000 km for the 41TE / 62TE and RFE families, shorter under towing duty. After solenoid pack or valve body work, complete the relearn procedure.
