Ford and Mazda spent two decades engineering transmissions together, which is why so many of their gearboxes are the same unit under two names: the 4F27E is the Mazda FN4A-EL, the FNR5 is the FS5A-EL, and the CD4E has its Mazda twin as well. Ford’s later history adds two more partnerships - the 6F transverse family came out of a joint program with GM (the 6F35 shares its core design with GM’s 6T40 family, though parts are not directly interchangeable between the Ford and GM versions), and the 6R rear-wheel-drive units are license-built ZF 6HP designs. Mazda went its own way with the in-house Skyactiv-Drive. For parts, the twin naming is the key: identify the unit, not the badge.
Our store solutions: overhaul kits, friction and steel sets, solenoids, valve body components, torque converter parts, sensors and complete rebuild kits - OE, OEM and selected aftermarket, depending on the unit.
The intervals below are general MID Auto workshop guidance. The exact fluid specification, quantity, service procedure and interval must be confirmed by transmission code, VIN and the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation.
Fluid specification follows the unit, not the brand: the correct Mercon generation for each Ford family (per the vehicle documentation, e.g. Mercon LV for the 6F units), and strictly Mazda FZ fluid for Skyactiv-Drive - substitutes are a known cause of shudder there. As general guidance: fluid and filter every 60,000 km, shorter under towing or city-heavy duty.
